ROOT CANAL (ENDODONTICS)
Digging deep for your health.
Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with diseases of the dental pulp and its supporting structure. Endodontists are Dentists with special post-graduate training in this field. An endodontist is also experienced in finding the cause of oral and facial pain that has been difficult to diagnose. Although General Dentists can perform endodontic treatment, patients are sometimes referred to an Endodontist when the case is complicated or more difficult than usual.
For an endodontic procedure (root canal) the area surrounding the tooth would be numbed and an opening would be created in order to remove any infection in the tooth. Once the area has been cleared of the infection, the opening is sealed to prevent bacteria from reentering. It is in our experience that a crown should be considered after a root canal to further ensure the success of the procedure.
Root canals have been the topic of many discussions highlighting fears associated with the dentist. Just remember, an infection in the root canal often causes bone loss in the area near the root. In most cases, removing the infection from the root canal space allows the surrounding bone tissue to regenerate. Taking the necessary steps to secure your dental health can be greatly beneficial for the future health of your teeth.
